The days are getting shorter and colder, but before you put the heating on full whack here’s a few tips for keeping warm this winter.

  1. Go for a walk on a crisp, bright winters day- you'll soon feel warmer and you’re getting exercise.
  2. Stop draughts from getting in- if you don't have draught excluders, rolled up towels work just as well- place anywhere the cold air can get in (doors, cat flaps, windows etc.)
  3. Recycle heat that’s already there- when you’ve finished cooking, open the oven door and let the heat escape in to the room.
  4. Keep the front door closed. When you’re loading/unloading the car or emptying the bins, at the very least pull the door to in between trips- shutting it completely and remembering to take a key is the best way to stop heat getting out.
  5. Use aluminium foil- place it shiny side up behind radiators to reflect the heat.
  6. Get cosy- get yourself a supply of blankets and snuggle up on the sofa with a warm drink.
  7. Get a bedtime routine. Have a hot bath before getting in to bed to prepare your body for sleep- use a blanket above or below your duvet for an extra layer of warmth. (Remember your bedroom should be between 18-21 degrees to get the best night’s sleep.)
  8. Spice things up. Adding spice to your food can help you to feel warmer. Sprinkle some in to your cooking or make a heartwarming dish like chilli con carne on a cold winter’s night- it’s not scientifically proven, but it works!

Try these out and enjoy a cosy winter this year.
